Copper is being decommissioned and the FCC has cleared the runway.
In 2025 and 2026 the FCC streamlined the rules carriers use to retire copper, removing notice filings and shortening the path to discontinuance. AT&T has publicly committed to retiring most of its copper network by the end of 2029, and POTS pricing is climbing in the meantime. Acting before a 30-day notice arrives turns a fire drill into a project.
